Some reviewers are complaining about the timer not working properly. If you read the description for the pitcher you'll have an answer to your question. I didn't and ended up contacting Mavea who explained why the timer on my pitcher ticked down to 0% after only 3 weeks of use. The timer is not simply a clock like you get with the Brita filter. Theirs is a dummy clock that ticks down 2 months regardless of how often you fill it. Mavea claims their timer is more sophisticated than that. It also factors in the hardness of the water and the amount of water you put into the pitcher. My city water is hard (14) and we refill the pitcher quite a bit...even though there's only 2 of us plus a dog in this household. I'm home all day and I drink a lot of water. The dog gets filtered water too in his bowl. :)
So that explains why the timer is not giving all of us the same information. I'd rather know my filter is nearing its usefulness than to not know and keep drinking... Read more

I bought this filter for my Brita Maxtra pitcher (NOT the classic cylinder Brita filter) that I purcahsed in Italy and used for one year there. Apon returning to the states, I was surprised to find out that Brita doesn't sell the Maxtra in North America. The Mavea Maxtra filter is clearly the exact same filter. It works perfectly in the Brita Maxtra pitcher and I couldn't be happier with the quality.

I LOVE this water filter. We didn't order it from Amazon because I just discovered they ship and sell it. Now that I know I will be ordering the replacement filters. Occasionally I have to drink regular tap water and I am shocked at how different and gross it tastes. Our system has never leaked as another review indicated. Nothing has cracked either. It was survived 2 moves - one across the country. I couldn't live without Santevia water!

I wanted a filter that did not depend on electricity and would not be as wasteful as my ro system. This system does exactly what it claims on the company website. That being said, if you are looking for a wide spectrum water filter that aggressively removes all contaminants... or is useable with anything but tap water-you will have to look elsewhere.
My one complaint... like numerous others I have seen complaining about the spout leaking; so does my unit (very minor leak but very annoying). I suspect the trouble is with the relatively thin and cheap quality washers that are included with the Santevia for the water tap fitting on the container wall. The silicone washers that seal between the upper and lower containers at the ceramic filter are very thick, high and high grade. I suspect that if the Santevia people would have not cheaped out on these tap washers that there would be no leak problems at all. I plan to go and buy my own to remedy the problem.

While I love the water that comes out of the spout I really don't love when it drips out all night long and ruins furniture. The spout is complete leaky crap and they need to fix this immediately. Also the ceramic pre-filter just decided to crack one day and it's a $40 replacement. Fix these issues and make it nicer to look at and I will certainly improve my rating. Overall I think it is overpriced plastic and rocks.

We always kept two boxes of these on hand as replacements when we used our Brita filter pitcher (we went to an in-line because we drink so much filtered water --we'd go through 40 gallons in no time, but that is a LOT of water.) There are three "gotcha's" on these filters to be aware of:
1. Do not let the filter dry out. When the pitcher is empty, you should refill the reservoir right away. When the pitcher is full or partly full, the bottom of the filter is in the water and keeping moist.
2. The filter needs to be soaked and flushed exactly according to directions. Some of the charcoal packing comes off in the flushing process, and if you don't take care of it, you will have specks in the water. This is no big problem, just something to be aware of.
3. Never put overly warm or hot water through the filter.
If you follow the directions, you will have, as we did, gallons of water that cost a lot less and taste as good or better than the water you buy in plastic... Read more

I have been using Brita filters for over six years now and I have nothing but the best to say about them. Living in a part of the country where the tap water contains impurities resulting in poor taste, at first I resorted to bottled water. Besides being hard on the old wallet, I found that some brands had a burnt aftertaste to them. So I tried Brita. I was amazed at how it improved the taste of ordinary tap water. It tasted better than some bottled water I had been purchasing and it was crystal clear. I have been using Brita ever since. The only drawback initially is the cost of the pitcher, but once you have it the only other cost are the filters that are readily available at most stores. Each filter lasts about 40 gallons, which translates into getting bottled water quality for seventeen cents per gallon.

In California the water tends to be very hard. I purchased an under the sink two stage water filtration system and thought the problem would be solved. The water still tasted bad so I bought a Brita pitcher filter. Unbelievable! It tasted so good. I think it's because each filter has silver oxide particles mixed in with the charcoal and it softens the water very well. I wish I would have tried this filter first.
Since moving to the east coast I still find that these filters do a great job at making the water taste as good or better than bottled water at a fraction of the cost.
