A 6-12 month time span is recommended for filter cartridge replacement (it is recommended that all carbon filters be replaced within 12 months), and the filter system automatically shuts off water when the filter cartridge is being replaced.

Our home usually tests above the EPA 90th percentile level for lead content, and even though that is still not a "hazardous" amount according to the EPA, we feel better not drinking or cooking with the water straight from the tap. This filter removes about 99.99999999999999% of everything nasty, and the water is fresh and tasty. The filters are expensive, but we only need to replace them every six months. That equates to less than $10/month for super-clean water and better peace of mind. They are easy to replace, and my local recycling facility accepts them for recycling (call ahead, always!). My InSinkerator instant hot/cold + filter system is new (2009 model), and I've never had a problem with installing these filters.
