SteriPEN Adventurer Opti Handheld UV Water Purifier

Product Description

The Adventurer Opti is the latest and greatest advance in outdoor water purification.

Amazon.com Product Description

Most people like to draw water from nature when camping or hiking, but even a stream that looks clean may not be. Microorganisms most often come from animal and human waste and are spread by water run-off that ends up in local water sources. Enter the SteriPen Adventurer Opti handheld UV water purifier, the smallest and lightest outdoor SteriPen on the market. The Adventurer Opti is equipped with a revolutionary optical eye that senses nearby water. The purifier then uses patent-pending UV purification technology to destroy 99.9 percent of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, including Giardia and cryptosporidium. The unit also includes an insulating sleeve around the UV lamp to allow purification in even the coldest of waters. As a result, you can enjoy your hiking and camping trips to the mountains, lakes, or forests without the fear of getting ill from unsafe stream or lake water.

The SteriPEN took top honors in the 2011 Backpacker Magazine Editor's Choice Awards.
The Adventurer Opti works on any source of clear, fresh water in any country, including bottled water from unknown sources.

The Adventurer Opti is extremely efficient, with a design that purifies a half-liter of water in 48 seconds and 1 liter in just 90 seconds. Plus, the optical sensor can double as a convenient LED flashlight. Activated by pressing and holding the single button down for three seconds, the flashlight makes a great backup light when camping or taking a nighttime walk to refill your water bottle. Bundled with two disposable CR123 batteries and a neoprene case with a belt loop, the Adventurer Opti works with containers with a minimum 1.75-inch diameter opening, including Nalgene wide-mouth bottles.

About UV Purification
The UV water purification method is more than 100 years old, and is currently used to purify drinking water by some of the largest cities in the world, including Seattle, New York, and many others in North America, Europe, and Asia. Several leading bottled water manufacturers also use UV purification to purify their source water. During the UV purification method, the ultraviolet energy emitted by the light is absorbed by the cells of the microbe, preventing the cell enzymes from "reading" its DNA. Without intact DNA, microbes can't reproduce to make you sick. The process is simple but effective, destroying more than 99.9 percent of harmful microorganisms.

Purifying water with UV light offers many advantages. In addition to being safe and effective, UV light does not alter the taste, pH, or other properties of the water, and works without introducing chemicals into the water. SteriPen UV purifiers have also been tested by the Water Quality Association (WQA) against the U.S. EPA Microbiological Water Purifier Standard, and have received the WQA's Gold Seal, signifying that the products purify water safely and effectively.

About Hydro-Photon
Miles Maiden, the founder of Hydro-Photon and a dedicated outdoorsmen, thought there were better ways to purify water in the wild than filters or chemicals. After years of research, he dedicated himself to the development of ultraviolet technology--the same technology used in municipal water treatment plants--for use in a personal, portable device that would provide the user with safe drinking water anywhere. Hydro-Photon received its first SteriPen patent in 1999, followed by patents in 2000 and 2003. In 1999, the first SteriPen was sold through REI, and in 2001 Time magazine named the SteriPen one of the best inventions of the year. The SteriPen's speed, effectiveness, and portability have impressed end users and media alike, leading to profiles in Backpacker magazine and Newsweek and on the Today show as a powerful, user-friendly alternative to pumps, chemicals, and filters.

I had the old model Adventurer that frequently turned itself off in the middle of a purification cycle or wouldn't start at all. This model fixes all those problems, plus it works as a backup flashlight. It's been absolutely reliable on four trips now and I love it. Sure beats carrying a 1 lb. filter.
I recommend you get a water-clear bottle so it's easy to see when the UV light turns off; Nalgene makes one in the Tritan series. Tinted bottles make it hard to see whether the light is glowing or not, especially in the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice update to the classic SteriPen Adventurer, May 19, 2010

I had held off on getting one of these for awhile. Basically the concept seemed like magic to me. Wave the magic light in your water and kill all the germs. Well guess what? They work.

You will still need to filter to get any chunks out, SteriPen makes the FitsAll Filter just for this purpose. The FitsAll filter also acts like and adapter to fit the SteriPEN into a Kleen Kanteen. That makes for 1 liter of water purified in less than a minute.

This model comes with a nice neoprene case that will clip to your belt and a removable hard plastic cover that helps protect the end. It also has a flash light function, so you can filter at night.

They have also put in some circuitry to keep it from turning on unless you have it submerged in the water. So no more accidentally turning it on and running down the batter. I haven't had this model for too long, but I'm loving it so far.

1.0 out of 5 stars steripen reliability, July 13, 2011

Recently I completed the Kokoda track walk in Papua and New Guinea. Once on this walk there is no support so your gear has to be reliable and effective. In preparation I had acquired this model of steripen through Amazon. When it arrived I tested it and found the internal connections around the battery were not good, however, a small piece of aluminium foil seemed to complete the circuit consistently. [ideally I would have returned the item to Amazon for replacement but the logistics of sending it back from Australia and then waiting for the new one were not possible in the time before I left - this is no criticism of Amazon's despatch and delivery time which has always been excellent]. On day 3 of the 8 day walk the pen stopped working and would not resume no matter how much fiddling I did with some more aluminium foil. Fortunately I had taken purification pills just in case and they came in handy.

In the party was another person who had an identical steripen... Read more
